What LCD screen to buy for your computer?

What LCD screen to buy for your computer?

At a time when the old CRT screens are stored in the closet, the flat panel LCD that invade our offices. But how to choose? What size? What resolution? Some tips for buying the right page.

What screen for what need?

There are two types of LCD. Said a passive matrix, which uses technology TN, and active matrix, TFT known. But today, most have screens TFT technology, which gives a much better image quality.

To work with a photo editor or video

If you are a graphic designer, you need a screen above Range: large (minimum 20'') for a display comfort and performance for perfect image quality (contrast, brightness, etc.)..

To play video games

In addition to a super efficient machine, you need a screen of very good quality. A look at the response time, especially if you play games where there is action ...

Watching movies

Choose a format "cinema". The best: 16/10 a screen at least 20''. See also: the degree of contrast, brightness.

To make the office

A small screen (a 17 or 19'') is more than enough for comfortable viewing. After it is personal taste.

General and technical

Size

The size, indicated in inches, determines the length of the diagonal of the screen. You find 14 (35.56 cm) to 30''(76.2 cm), although most sites or shops sell from 17''(43.18 cm). For comfort, a 22-inch (55.88 cm).

Screen size

Several types of format.
The 4 / 3: standard, less and less common.
The 16 / 9: wider than the 4 / 3 and lower. Usually reserved for TV screens.
The 16/10: also called "wide", it looks like 16 / 9, and less "crushed". With widespread.

Connectors

The ports on your screen.
VGA port: port most widespread, it tends to disappear in favor of DVI ports.
DVI: more and more present on the screens, it allows a quality of the superior image (HD).
HDMI: You can connect the latest consoles.
USB.

Resolution

The resolution is the number of pixels that can display the screen per inch in width and height. The resolution indicated for the screens give its maximum resolution (or so-called native). Plus it, the higher the picture quality will be high. A good 20''has a resolution of 1680 x 1050.

Contrast

If your screen will be used mainly to watch movies, this should be taken into account in the first place. For good image quality, strong contrasts are recommended: the blacks are deep and can give depth to the picture. 800:1 is a good average. The best display screens from 1000:1 (on emerging contrast ratio of 2500: 1).

Colors

Plus a color screen, the more the picture quality is good. On one screen to another, the number of color is substantially the same, ie 16.2 million; some go for the time up to 16.7 million.

Brightness

Expressed in cd/m2 (candela - unit of measurement of luminous intensity - per square meter), as in the color brightness is roughly one screen to another. For a beautiful image, a minimum of 300 cd/m2. Up to 500 cd/m2 now for the best.

Response time

Translated time ascent and descent information. To take full advantage of the graphic qualities of your video games or movies, response time must be very short, between 2 and 8 ms.

Angle of view

The angle is determined horizontally and vertically. It determines the degree to which the visibility of the spectator who is not in line with the screen becomes poor. A wide-angle (160-170 °) is not necessary ... unless you always look at your screen later.

Consumption

Although LCDs consume much less than the old CRT monitors, plus your big screen will consume more. 30''for a gourmand, an average of 140 W. A good 24''can consume 65 W.
